Summary

The New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Only Woman in the Room returns with a thrilling reconstruction of one of the most notorious events in literary history: Agatha Christie's mysterious 11-day disappearance in 1926。

In December 1926, Agatha Christie goes missing。 Investigators find her empty car on the edge of a deep, gloomy pond, the only clues some tire tracks nearby and a fur coat left in the car—strange for a frigid night。 Her World War I veteran husband and her daughter have no knowledge of her whereabouts, and England unleashes an unprecedented manhunt to find the up-and-coming mystery author。 Eleven days later, she reappears, just as mysteriously as she disappeared, claiming amnesia and providing no explanations for her time away。

The puzzle of those missing eleven days has persisted。 With her trademark historical fiction exploration into the shadows of the past, acclaimed author Marie Benedict brings us into the world of Agatha Christie, imagining why such a brilliant woman would find herself at the center of such murky historical mysteries。

What is real, and what is mystery? What role did her unfaithful husband play, and what was he not telling investigators?

Agatha Christie novels have withstood the test of time, due in no small part to Christie's masterful storytelling and clever mind that may never be matched, but Agatha Christie's untold history offers perhaps her greatest mystery of all。

Fans of The Secrets We KeptThe Lions of Fifth Avenue, and The Alice Network will enjoy this riveting saga of literary history, suspense, and love gone wrong。

Fun to read at the same time as The Mysterious Affair at Styles。

Fictional novel based upon the real-life 11day disappearance of Agatha Christie in 1926。 The author had a creative approach but the characters (especially Archie) were written in an inrenrionallly confusing way so it was difficult to decipher what was true about the character and what was false。

I liked this book, but wished I had read the author's note before the book, as I didn't know it was based on Agatha Christie's actual disappearance for 11 days, which she never explained。 I liked this book, but wished I had read the author's note before the book, as I didn't know it was based on Agatha Christie's actual disappearance for 11 days, which she never explained。 。。。more

A little boring to be honest。 The plot of the book was pretty creative, but it felt like it dragged on。

Oh this was so dull。 It's almost impressive how bland this was - you have the worlds greatest mystery writers, the absolute queen of the genre, go missing for 11 days, no one knows where she is。。。 and this is what you come up with? Although the story was fascinating, the double narrative in the book seemed awkward。

Beth

Disappointed that most if the story at the time of the disappearance was told from the point-of-view of the husband Archie。

Lynn

The events leading up to the disappearance of Agatha Christie, interspersed (for no good reason) with the days of her absence。 Short "chapters" with little to say。 The events leading up to the disappearance of Agatha Christie, interspersed (for no good reason) with the days of her absence。 Short "chapters" with little to say。 。。。more

This was just meh。 Relatively short but slow in many areas。 I read the Agatha Christie wiki to get the actual story。 The imagined story may have had an element of truth to it in regard to how her husband may have treated her。 Except for the infidelity (not a spoiler) this is a clean read。

This was a quick read and interesting for the most part, though I didn't love it。 I know it was true to life, but Archie was a really annoying person to read about。 He really was awful in most of his choices。 It was also frustrating to read about the way Agatha saw her duty as a wife to him。 The story itself was interesting, but a little long for me。 I didn't hate the ending, but it wasn't the most satisfying either。 I also struggled a little with the format: the chapters went back and forth bet This was a quick read and interesting for the most part, though I didn't love it。 I know it was true to life, but Archie was a really annoying person to read about。 He really was awful in most of his choices。 It was also frustrating to read about the way Agatha saw her duty as a wife to him。 The story itself was interesting, but a little long for me。 I didn't hate the ending, but it wasn't the most satisfying either。 I also struggled a little with the format: the chapters went back and forth between present and past tense, which felt jarring to me。 。。。more

I enjoy Marie Benedict's historical fictional novels that bring to forefront the lives of many interesting women who contributed greatly to our world。 This tale of Mrs。 Christie focusses on her relationsship with Archibald Christie and attempts to fill in the period of her separation, disappearance and divorce from her husband。 I enjoy Marie Benedict's historical fictional novels that bring to forefront the lives of many interesting women who contributed greatly to our world。 This tale of Mrs。 Christie focusses on her relationsship with Archibald Christie and attempts to fill in the period of her separation, disappearance and divorce from her husband。 。。。more

3。5 - the final, gone girl-esque twist, is good but it feels like a slow journey to get there, which feels weird to say because this isn’t particularly long - but now I definitely need to read some Agatha Christie novels!

I was excited to read this。 I love "fiction based on fact"。 But I was a little disappointed in this story。 Agatha's backstory and details about her upbringing and family relationships were interesting。 It was also interesting to read about her rise to success。 But the meat of the story, her disappearance, never really grabbed me。 It could be the way the story unfolded, you learn fairly early who the "culprit" is。 Then it's just a little bit of a slog waiting for the hows and ultimate whys to be I was excited to read this。 I love "fiction based on fact"。 But I was a little disappointed in this story。 Agatha's backstory and details about her upbringing and family relationships were interesting。 It was also interesting to read about her rise to success。 But the meat of the story, her disappearance, never really grabbed me。 It could be the way the story unfolded, you learn fairly early who the "culprit" is。 Then it's just a little bit of a slog waiting for the hows and ultimate whys to be revealed。 Maybe an epilogue revealing Agatha's life a year on from this incident would have helped me feel like it was complete story。 。。。more

I wanted to like it but it just wasn’t very interesting。 I’m disappointed as I’ve read all of the authors books and liked most of them。 2。5 stars。

Stuart Malcolm

3。75 stars。 This book annoyed me at first because the alternative chapters format (one present, one past) was irritating。 But I’m glad I persevered as the second half is much improved and it’s an interesting take on Christie’s disappearance。

Not my favorite。 It had its moments that engaged me, but over all my motivation to finish was to get to my next read。

Agatha Christie is one of my favorite authors, so when I saw Marie Benedict wrote “The Mystery of Mrs。 Christie,” I had to read it!The book is written with two alternating timelines。 The first being in 1912 when Agatha meets her first husband, and continues through their whirlwind courtship, difficulties of war, the birth of their daughter, and Agatha’s first book。 This timeline gives you little glimpses of their personal lives, and leads up to the second timeline, which is December 1926。 Agatha Agatha Christie is one of my favorite authors, so when I saw Marie Benedict wrote “The Mystery of Mrs。 Christie,” I had to read it!The book is written with two alternating timelines。 The first being in 1912 when Agatha meets her first husband, and continues through their whirlwind courtship, difficulties of war, the birth of their daughter, and Agatha’s first book。 This timeline gives you little glimpses of their personal lives, and leads up to the second timeline, which is December 1926。 Agatha has disappeared and her husband, Archie, is being questioned。 Not much is known about Agatha’s disappearance。 She never explained it, not even in her autobiography! This book merely explores one possible explanation, and while entertaining, I felt it was a slow burn with an anti-climatic read。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I am usually not a fan of historical fiction that adds to or changes the lives/reputations of actual people, but I make an exception with this one。 The storyline paints Agatha in glowing colors as a victim and her husband Archie as a controlling manipulator。。。usually I hate this type of thing。。。but where this one differs, is that Agatha's telling of the story is as an "unreliable narrator。" Therefore, the events presented are suspect as not being fully true to begin with!I thought it was an exce I am usually not a fan of historical fiction that adds to or changes the lives/reputations of actual people, but I make an exception with this one。 The storyline paints Agatha in glowing colors as a victim and her husband Archie as a controlling manipulator。。。usually I hate this type of thing。。。but where this one differs, is that Agatha's telling of the story is as an "unreliable narrator。" Therefore, the events presented are suspect as not being fully true to begin with!I thought it was an excellent way to present a possible explanation to the 11 day disappearance of this true genius of a mystery writer! The solution is plausible。 Very plausible。 I wonder why I don’t like Agatha Christie’s books but was interested in the mystery of her disappearance。
